Colloidal gold (also known as gold nanoparticles) refers to a dispersion of gold nanoparticles (diameter 1–100 nm) in a solvent, typically water. Due to its excellent stability, biocompatibility, and unique optical and electromagnetic properties, colloidal gold has become a key material in fields such as in vitro diagnostics, biosensing, cancer therapy, and medical imaging.

Forms stable Au-S bonds, enabling convenient conjugation with various antibodies, antigens, proteins, oligonucleotides, drugs, polymers, and other molecules for targeted delivery and highly specific detection.

Exhibits a typical localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Under specific wavelength illumination, a strong electromagnetic field is generated at specific sites, significantly enhancing Raman signals and improving detection sensitivity.

Gold has a higher atomic number (Au 79 vs I 53) and X-ray absorption coefficient (at 100 keV: Au 5.16 cm²·g⁻¹, I 1.94 cm²·g⁻¹). The contrast effect per unit mass of gold is approximately 2.7 times that of iodine, making it ideal for high-contrast CT imaging.
