N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC)–Gold Complexes are not only widely used in catalytic transformations in organic chemistry but also find applications in the synthesis of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and next-generation optoelectronic materials, making them powerful tools in modern synthesis. However, the synthesis of such complexes often involves toxic solvents, the use of phase-transfer catalysts, multiple steps, and long reaction times.

Recently, Professor Steven P. Nolan from Ghent University reported, for the first time, a simple and efficient method for synthesizing NHC–metal–amide complexes, and successfully prepared two novel catalysts: [Au(IPr)(cbz)] (79-0000) and [Au(SIPr)(cbz)] (79-0002). The synthesis is conducted under mild conditions using a weak base (K₂CO₃) and green solvents such as acetone or ethanol, thereby avoiding the use of toxic solvents. Furthermore, Professor Nolan demonstrated that these complexes can also be synthesized solvent-free using mechanochemistry techniques [1,2].

Studies have shown that [Au(IPr)(cbz)] (79-0000) and [Au(SIPr)(cbz)] (79-0002) possess high energy and long lifetimes in solution, exhibiting excellent optical properties. Even under non-optimized conditions, these complexes effectively catalyze intermolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions of dicinnamyl ether [1][1], and indole derivatives [1,2]. Additionally, [Au(SIPr)(cbz)] (79-0002) has been successfully applied in the catalytic carboxylic acid addition to alkynes [3].
