Stabilizers and Preservatives are indispensable functional components in in vitro diagnostic (IVD) reagents, serving distinct yet complementary roles in ensuring the reliability and longevity of diagnostic tests.

Stabilizers are primarily responsible for maintaining the structural integrity and biological activity of critical reagent components, such as enzymes, antibodies, and antigens. They protect these sensitive molecules from degradation caused by physical and chemical stressors, including temperature fluctuations, pH shifts, and oxidation. Common stabilizers include sugars (e.g., trehalose), polyols (e.g., glycerol), and proteins (e.g., BSA), which work collectively to extend the reagent's shelf life and guarantee consistent analytical performance—throughout its stated validity period.

Preservatives,are antimicrobial agents designed to prevent microbial contamination (bacterial and fungal growth) in liquid reagents, especially in multidose containers. By inhibiting or killing microorganisms, preservatives safeguard reagent integrity, prevent changes in pH or turbidity, protect automated instrumentation from biofilm clogging, and ensure patient safety. Their role is crucial for maintaining reagent sterility during repeated use.
